Last weekend, UD students organized a Relay for Life on our campus to raise money for cancer research. The event included a survivors walk, luminaria ceremony, and many other fun ways to stay active. The students brought their sleeping bags and stayed in the field house until 6:00 am the next morning. University of Delaware students raised $99,293.45 for the cause! Keep up the good work Blue Hens!

Blue Hen Bites at Over Easy

They always say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well Blue Hens, a new breakfast place has opened on Main Street.

The picture above is of Jay’s Fried Eggs. It has fried eggs over sourdough toast topped with a combo of tomatoes and onions that carry a spicy kick to it. It is the perfect portion size, leaving you just on the side full and completely satisfied. I can’t remember being so pleased by a meal on Main Street in a long time.

Over Easy Cafe opened in early April and isn’t like any other place in Newark. Over Easy offers breakfast and brunch items all day. The menu may be small, but do not let that fool you. All the items are unique, fresh, and has a different ethnic flair.

Other items include a Bombay omelet complete with a side of naan, or Indian bread. There’s a meat lovers omelet to satisfy any carnivore. Gluten free options are expected to be added to the menu over the summer, too.

If the unique menu isn’t enough to draw you in the décor inside and customer service should. The couches and chairs are comfy and warm. There are swinging basket chairs that add fun to any meal. And the service is by far the best on Main Street. The owner is a sweet, caring young woman who will be best friends with you by the time you leave.

Wake up early on the weekend for brunch or have breakfast for dinner. Either way, Over Easy is the easy choice.

We all love pizza. And we all love mac and cheese. Did you know you can have both?

Peace a Pizza offers a wide array of unique pizzas—including mac and cheese pizza! If mac and cheese isn’t what you’re craving, you could get chicken parmesan pizza or even Philly cheesesteak!

I know a lot of you get pizza at Margherita’s because you’re craving that New York style pizza—but give Peace a Pizza a shot.

The staff is always friendly, they’re open late on the weekends, they have cookies for dessert, and do I really need to say it again: mac and cheese pizza!

Plan on being stuck in the library later tonight? Why not bring some homemade dining hall Chex mix for a late night study snack?

Chef Blue Hen presents: “Hugh Morris’ Peanut Butter Chex Mix”

Ingredients

Cereal (Cereal Station)
Peanut Butter (Bagel Area)
Chocolate Chips (Ice Cream Area)

Optional Ingredients:

Marshmallows (Ice Cream Area)
Raisins (Salad Bar)
Candies, Sprinkles, etc. (Ice Cream Area)

Steps:

In a small bowl microwave peanut butter and chocolate chips until melted. (Marshmallows can be added to this mixture if desired!) Stir occasionally if necessary.
Pour heated peanut butter chocolate mixture on top of Chex cereal in a larger bowl
Add any toppings (raisins, graham cracker crumbs, sprinkles, m&ms, crushed cookies, etc.)
Mix well
Flatten mixture onto a plate to harden.

Hint: Make at the beginning of the meal so that it can harden completely before you need to leave!

Hugh Morris snackin’ is no joke!

Sometimes you just need some spice! Don’t fret, Blue Hens, a mexican meal is just a few minutes away!

Chef Blue Hen presents: Shredded Chicken and Black Bean Quesadilla

Ingredients

2 Corn Tortillas (Salad Bar)
Shredded Cheese (Salad Bar)
Chicken Strips (Salad Bar or Main Line)
Black Beans (Salad Bar)
Optional: Jalapenos and Onions (Salad Bar)

Steps:

Place one tortilla on plate
Top with shredded cheese, chicken strips, and black beans
If desired, add various peppers and onions
Place second tortilla on top
Microwave for 2 minutes or until cheese has melted

¡Buen provecho!

With Bass Campus less than one week away, here’s an interview with the man behind it, senior Joe Vela.

What made you want to start Deltronica?

I wanted to create new opportunities and experiences for music lovers. It’s no secret that electronic music has been exploding in the United States for the past 5 or 10 years, yet there was no outlet for attending these types of shows or learning production at the University. I was sick of seeing the same type of boring acts that other RSOs were bringing in and I wanted to introduce new types of music to Newark. I think we have been a success thus far.

Who are some of your musical influences?

Anyone that is doing something different and can lay it down live. I have been playing drums since I was about 10 years old and I gravitate towards jam music, so I would consider Kris Myers from Umphrey’s McGee and Allen Aucoin from the Disco Biscuits as the best right now. Neil Peart from Rush is also an influence that immediately comes to mind. I really like all music, but now I am especially impressed by live bands that fuse modern electronic music with other genres.

How long has your band Tweed been together?

I guess it’s been about a year and a half now. We have made progress that takes some bands twice as long to make. We have already shared the stage with big names like Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, The Heavy Pets, and Beard-o-Bees (Jesse Miller of Lotus). We’re playing 6 shows in April, a ton a big gigs in May, and are beginning to plan our festival tour this summer. Our Jamchronica EP will be released this summer too.

What has been your favorite gig that your band has played?

Hard to say…There was a show at Klondike Kate’s in February with Pigeons Playing Ping Pong that was packed! Anytime we get to collaborate with talented bands like Pigeons, the show has a great energy. We had a 90-minute set, which is a little longer than what we are usually given which allows us to better express our music. All of our friends (that were over 21) got to come out and there was no cover and cheap drinks so it was a fun time. I like playing festivals too, but we manage to maintain some of that festival vibe in all of our shows throughout the year.

What gave you the idea for bass campus?

There is nothing more fun than a music festival. There is a certain freedom that anyone who has been a part of one can relate to and I wanted to share that with the Delaware community. Plus, I have always wanted to host a music festival and what better opportunity than in my Senior year at UD? Deltronica co-founder AJ [DiBiase] and current President Charlie [Field] really helped push the concept forward. We had most of the ideas planned before we were even allotted a budget from the University, which really helped Bass Campus come to fruition.

Who are you most excited to see play at Bass Campus?

BioDiesel—Johnny Rabb and Clay Parnell are two of the most talented musicians around. I think everyone is going to see BioDiesel blow up in the next few years and Deltronica is giving students an early look. But I’m really excited to see everyone. The lineup was hand-picked to feature some of the best up and coming artists from the region. I’m not going to miss a set.

I live on the first floor of Cannon, so I’ve adopted a open-window policy on these nice Spring Days were I open my fire escape screen while I’m in my dorm. I keep it open while I’m around so that friends walking through South Green can stop by and say hello.

I love it, because things end up happening like this giant inflatable dinosaur - a publicity stunt for the REP’s upcoming production of Skin of Our Teeth - coming by.

(PS: That also means if you’re on a tour of the university and see a screen open on the first floor of Cannon you should come by and say hello!)

Spring break: a whole week devoted to going fast. UD women’s rowing was out on the water twice a day; my saving grace was the team. Cliche, I know, but Eat, Sleep, Row! Since the dining halls weren’t open, we traveled to the grocery store early in the week, and stocked up on food. Novice ate dinner together almost every night, and it was so delicious! Practices were tough, but the week payed off as we headed to the Occoquan sprints on Sunday. We proved our speed when Novice 8 had the fastest times in all of the heats, and took 2nd place in the finals. All of the Delaware crews performed well, some medaling as well. I love the team, and couldn’t imagine spring break any other way… well except at the beach.
